Horticulture fact sheet
Vegetable crops, including root and tuber crops, are the second most important group of crops produced worldwide, after cereals. In some countries agriculture-growth potential is more strongly linked with diversification into high-value horticulture crops. Horticulture can be significant in terms of inclusiveness of small farmers: It can be very profitable with very limited landholding. As well, it can be managed by family labour, without entailing additional labour costs. The main challenge for scaling up inclusion of small farmers in horticulture is their difficulty in meeting food safety standards and in turn reluctance of supermarkets and exporters in engaging with them.
