Aquaculture fact sheet

aquaculture (2)-

The supply of fish and shellfish caught from seas and inland waters will not increase. The growing demand for fish and other seafood can only be met with increased production of farmed fish and other aquatic animals. With an average growth of 6.6% since 1970 aquaculture is probably the fastest growing food-producing sector. It now contributes 48.5% of all the seafood consumed directly by people. Asia is by far the largest producers of farmed seafood, and worldwide, eleven million people are employed in farmed fish production as owner or labourer on fish and shellfish farms.
